Troubleshooting: Member Can’t Remove an Old Payment Method
A member is trying to remove a payment method from their account but is receiving an error message or cannot complete the removal.
Why This Happens (Root Cause)
In Yardi, a payment method cannot be deleted if it is currently set as the default payment method.
The system requires that a new default be established before the existing one can be removed.
This safeguard prevents a company from being left without a valid payment method for autopay or billing.
Common Symptoms
- “I’m trying to delete my payment method, but it says error.”
- “I can’t remove my bank account or card.”
- “It won’t let me delete my default payment method.”
How to Fix It (Action Steps)
Step 1 — Add a new payment method
Ask the member to add their new preferred payment method (Credit Card, Debit Card, or Bank Account) through the Your Studio App under the Invoices tab.
Step 2 — Set the new payment method as default
- Go to the Company Record in Yardi.
- Navigate to Billing > Payment Methods.
- Toggle between the three tabs (Credit, Debit, Bank Account) to find the new method.
- Check the Default box for the new method and click Save before leaving the page.
Why: The system must have a valid default payment method before the old one can be deleted.
Step 3 — Remove the old payment method
Once a new default is set:
- Click the trash can icon next to the old payment method in Yardi,
or instruct the member to delete it themselves in the Your Studio App under Invoices > Payment Methods.
If the Issue Persists
If the member still can’t remove the old payment method after setting a new default,
submit a Yardi Technical Issue ticket at help.yourstudio.com for further investigation.
Quick Summary
- Root Cause: A payment method can’t be removed if it’s set as default.
- Fix: Add and set a new default payment method, then delete the old one.
- System Behavior: Yardi prevents deleting a default payment method to ensure at least one valid billing source remains on file.
